Our Company Quanta BioDesign, Ltd., is located in Powell, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, the home of The Ohio State University. Founded in 1997 by Paul D. Davis, Ph.D. under the name BioOrganic Technologies, LLC, he moved into our original and current location in March of 1998. In Spring of 1999, we changed our name to Quanta BioDesign, Ltd., in order to better reflect our company mission. Quanta BioDesign was founded for the purpose of developing and commercializing an extensive line of products for companies involved in drug discovery and diagnostic development programs. These products are based on our proprietary discrete polyethylene glycol (dPEG®) chemistries, including our unique processes for making these important compounds. Our single molecular weight ethylene glycol conjugation technology, dPEG®, can eliminate common problems found in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic products, such as aggregation and non-specific interactions, poor water solubility, poor delivery, delivery issues/options, short serum half life, toxicity and antigenicity. The dPEG® product line is a unique technology platform which can be custom tailored to meet specific physical, chemical and morphological requirements in a broad array of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Chemistry applications which incorporate dPEG® products include conjugations, simple chemical modifications, cross linking, biotinylation, signal amplification, modification of biological therapeutics and peptide synthesis. Recently we introduced dPEG® products that offer new delivery options as well. We are involved in developing new cross-linking and labeling chemistries that incorporate the dPEG® technology, and will allow for completely new approaches to existing opportunities in these same areas of therapeutic and diagnostic development, and will revolutionize many of these areas as the new generations of drugs and diagnostics evolve.
Paul’s Story Paul came back to Ohio in 1997 to live where his late wife, Susan, grew up. He decided to pursue his visions for affecting the therapeutic and diagnostic fields of medicine using his passion and creativity in designing chemistry for these markets. Paul’s initial vision is to fully develop the potential and power of a broad range of specifically designed monodispersed (dPEG™) reagents for application in these markets. His previous experiences in both the R&D and manufacturing sides of the business at Molecular Probes, Pierce Biotechnology, and Mead Corp., gives him a very practical and broad background for this vision, as well as sound experience for running the business. Paul’s late wife, Susan, a non-smoker, died in the spring of 1999 from lung cancer (primary) and bone cancer (metastatic). Her death occasioned a deeper passion and commitment on Paul’s part to work closely with both diagnostic (early detection) and therapeutic (control and cure) companies to find better and new solutions to the challenges that are faced in confronting all kinds of disease states. His vision includes a very active involvement in creating new approaches to detection technologies, as well as some interesting and unusual thoughts in the therapeutic arena as well. For now, some of that will have to be played out through our tremendously creative, passionate, and skilled customers. Also, if you like love stories, you have to ask Paul about his journey to marrying Wren (our Business Manager).
Our People
As a small company, Quanta BioDesign, Ltd., has the advantage of great flexibility that is created by being “lean and mean.” Everyone has their hands in our process tree of producing our current product offerings. We currently have four Chemists, two Lab Techs and four Office Staff.
Paul Davis, Ph.D. - Even though Paul is busy with the everyday work of running a company, you can still find him in the lab a lot of the time, always working to develop new products for our customers. Paul received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Bowling Green State University. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Physics at Point Loma Nazarene University.
Alex Pokora, M.S. - Alex is responsible for developing a strategy, in conjunction with the management team and the R & D group, for monitoring and growing both the short term sales and long term sales to maximize the potential of the business. He has had extensive experience with Marketing, Management and Research in the chemistry field. He received his B.S. from Rutgers and his M.S. in Chemistry from The Ohio State University.
Robert Woodman, Ph.D. – Robert’s skills as an organic chemist, have a strong biology flavor, which gives us a more balanced and broader perspective on our work. He develops new products and works on manufacture of established products. Robert received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University. He received is Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from University of Southern Mississippi.
James Guyo, M.S. and MBA - James is a Senior Process Chemist and involved in process development and optimization, research and development and scale-up activities among other things. He also has extensive experience doing contract cGMP. He received his BS in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Zimbabwe in 1996 and graduated with an MBA in 2002 and a Masters in Chemistry in 2004 from Wright State University.
Dennis Conn - BS in chemistry from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois. He has been employed in chemical laboratories since 1982 then in large scale production and special synthesis and marketing with Pierce Chemical where Paul was his supervisor, and mentor in organic chemistry. It was in 2003 where they teamed up again at Quanta BioDesign. Dennis also filled R&D positions in the United States and Israel.
Ella Guyo - Ella is an Analytical Specialist and involved in QC activities. Prior to joining Quanta BioDesign, she worked as an Environmental Engineer for several years and is now transitioning to the field of chemistry. Ella received her BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe in 2000 and graduated with a Masters in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Dayton in 2004.
Bryan Davis – Bryan is currently involved in the process development and scale up activities as well as general maintenance of lab equipment. He is in his second year of college and currently enrolled at Columbus State Community College. Bryan is pursuing a degree in Chemistry.
Farid Yousef - Farid comes to us from Ramallah in the Palestinian Territories. Trained in his native land as a lawyer, educator, and social worker, Farid is the author of 17 books. He came to the United States in 2004. In 2006, Though he had no training in chemistry, Farid has proven himself to be an adept, skilled technician who now handles most of the chromatographic purification of products and intermediates that require such treatment.
